Buying a home? Don’t forget this one thing!

Buying a new home is such an exciting time – but it can also lead to a lot of headache. Many issues buyers face come from not being mentally prepared for the financial “surprises” that can arise. When you are in the process of buying a new home, it is always wise to hire a structural engineer. Structural engineers come to inspect the integrity of the structure and give you a report of their findings. You should be as prepared as possible for any potential issues or renovations that need to be made now or in the foreseeable future.

Should I, the buyer, hire an engineer?

Typically, your seller will make the necessary repairs to the home prior to selling. Unfortunately, they may not get an accurate report from their home inspector. Other times, they simply can’t afford to hefty repair costs. Therefore, you as the buyer would be wise to hire your own structural engineer (who is looking out for your best interest). This could save you from the unexpected later on down the road.

Home Inspector VS Structural Engineer

Home inspectors are great resources when selling a home. However, when getting an idea of the overall condition the home is in, you shouldn’t stop there. Due to their varying education in comparison to structural engineers, they can easily miss telling factors of structural issues. Inspectors look over the conditions of the house as a whole, not just the structure. This can lead to the inspector missing major warning signs since they have many things to worry about! With something as vital as your homes foundation, there’s good reason to play it safe. Having a structural engineer out to double check could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

If you suspect that any areas of the home may be the cause of issues with the structural integrity of the home, advise your engineer so that you can have an accurately detailed report that puts your mind at ease.
